Not just for taking pictures of distant objects,
April 10, 2012 This review is from: Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras(Non-US Product) (Accessory)
I had owned
Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black) for about a year and I have discovered that the standard lens that it came with was rather limited in terms of what sorts of shots I was able to take, especially when it came to taking pictures of distant object. I was not willing to spend too much money on any of the higher end professional or prosumer lenses. I needed something that would take decent photographs under the normal shooting condition, something comparable to the performance of the standard lens. I also wanted image stabilization, as I had come to appreciate how important it was for making low-blur shots. This Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II telephoto zoom lens fit that description perfectly, and over the time I've owned iy it has met or exceeded all of my...

Good companion to the kit lens,

Please don't take the Amazon star rating too serious - every lens has its pros and cons that I wouldn't want to squeeze into a single one-dimensional figure...
A quick note about me: I have been into SLR cameras and lenses for more than 20 years - as a hobby in the beginning and professionally later. Maybe because of my technical background I started testing my own lenses quite a while ago. I have a (no longer so) little test lab of my own where I do 6 different image quality tests (after taking a lens out for a while).
The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II offers a huge zoom range in a compact and lightweight form factor at an affordable price. It is a very popular choice for wildlife and sports photography, portraits and other purposes. It comes with an excellent image stabilizer that offers 4 f-stops gain but lacks a decent USM type autofocus motor which is probably the lens's weakest spot. The micro motor autofocus used is accurate but slow which makes it difficult to...

Great for the price, decent performance,
April 11, 2012 This review is from: Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras(Non-US Product) (Accessory)
I'm a beginning photographer and now that I've had a chance to use this lens at a few events I wanted to leave a review with my thoughts, particularly comparing it to the EF-S 18-55 IS II (kit lens for the T3i).
Pros:
- First and foremost, the price. This lens is capable of getting great shots given the right circumstances, and for under $200 it's great.
- Nice long zoom compared to the standard kit lens
- IS is always nice
Cons:
- Focus issues occasionally in lower light. Sometimes just won't focus, or takes a long time to focus. Haven't noticed this issue at all with the 18-55.
- Stiff zoom. Hard to get quick, precise changes in zoom during fast action and during a long event the zooming actually gets a little tiring (18-55 has a much smoother zoom).
- Overall noisier than the 18-55, not terrible, but definitely louder.
- Photos don't seem as clear as the 18-55. Could be a lot of issues, more camera shake inherent to longer...
